Are you also such a fan of cod? Then you are definitely not the only one. Cod is one of the most popular types of fish in Belgium, both for home cooking and in restaurants. Yet there are also many who do not like cod. Moreover, cod has a long way to go before it can be sold in shops. An alternative to cod? We list some (equally good!) fish species for you.
Haddock
Ever tried delicious fish chips? Then you have probably already eaten haddock! Haddock is part of the cod family. Although the fish is very similar to cod, haddock has a much softer texture. Delicious with a crispy crust around, pan-fried, steamed in the oven, is a delicious fish soup or in a curry. Moreover, the fish is also particularly tasty smoked!
You can find haddock all year round, although the fish is at its best from June to February.
Pollock
Like haddock and cod, saithe is also sold in skinless fillets in most (fish) shops. Pollock is slightly softer and drier in flavour than cod and also has a darker colour. A little less ‘sexy’ to put on your plate, but ideal for in a tasty fish preparation or ready-made meal.
Pollock’s season runs from May to January, but is available all year round.
Choose local fish or seasonal fish
Besides cod-like fish, of course, our seas have a lot more goodies to offer. Want to make the most ecological choice possible? Then choose fish species that swim in the North Sea. Soles, plaice, rays… are mostly caught by our Belgian fishermen. As a result, they go through a shorter chain, which ensures that the fish ends up on your plate even fresher and is a lot more ecological.
In addition, also choose seasonal fish. This is because during certain seasons, some fish are higher quality and better tasting than in the other season. Read more here more about it.
