Is fish actually healthy?

Vis is gezond voor het lichaam

Fish is healthy. That’s what you hear and read everywhere. But what positive effect does fish actually have on the human body? Read on!

A reduced risk of cardiovascular disease

Cardiovascular diseases are unfortunately common. In fact, worldwide, they are one of the most common causes of premature death. And yet, that risk can be reduced in a fairly simple way, namely by setting yourself a healthy and, above all, balanced pattern. Eating fish regularly also contributes to this healthy diet and provides a positive effect on the cardiovascular system.

Source of vitamin D and other

One of the most important vitamins your body needs is vitamin D. If you are deficient in this vitamin, you will soon experience various ailments:

  • Muscle pain
  • Fatigue
  • A weaker immune system
  • Reduced absorption of calcium

Fish, in turn, is one of the few food sources that contains vitamin D. So the more fish you eat, the higher the vitamin D content and the more energy you have.

Smaller chance of type 1 diabetes

Do you have an autoimmune disease? If so, your immune system sees your own body cells as invaders. For this reason, your body attacks the cells with antibodies, causing symptoms. Diabetes Type 1 is an example of such an autoimmune disease in which the production of insulin is slowed or stopped. Researchers directly link the intake of Omega3 fatty acids – found in fish – and/or fish oil to a lower risk of Diabetes Type 1 in children.

Better eyes

Those who eat a lot of fish also experience a reduced risk of eye diseases. In particular, the deterioration of the quality of the retina is an ailment that becomes increasingly prevalent as you get older.

Eating more fish lowers the risk of macular degeneration, as the deterioration of the retina is described in medical terms, by up to 42%. Women in particular benefit from this. The condition is inhibited, no doubt, by the Omega3 fatty acids found in fish.

Better sleep

Poor sleep can be due to several causes. The most well-known are stress and light from screens. But another, rather

unknown reason for insomnia, is lack of vitamin D, which plays an important role in regulating our sleep-wake rhythm. Considering fish is full of vitamin D, eating it has a positive effect on your sleep.
