Fish doesn’t have to be expensive

Makreel

Fish, expensive? Not necessarily. At least, not if you make the right choices. The price of fish depends a lot on its popularity, the season in which you buy it and sustainable fishing.

Contrary to what many people think, fish does not always have to be expensive. On the contrary, choosing the right type of fish can save you a lot. Not only the type of fish, but also the region it comes from and the seasons influence the price of fish and consequently your wallet. Because there are indeed affordable fish species that also taste good!

Tuna, salmon, cod… are expensive

Tuna, salmon, cod, sole… They are among the fish species we know best here in Belgium. They are also available everywhere. But the more certain fish species are fished, the fewer of them there are in the sea. Quotas are therefore established to ensure that fish species are not wiped out.

To curb the high demand for certain fish species, prices are raised And you feel that in your budget. So the more demand there is for salmon, tuna, sole or cod, the more expensive it gets. So lesser-known fish are also often a lot cheaper.

Seasonal fish is cheaper

Another factor contributing to the price of fish is the season in which you buy certain types of fish. If a certain type of fish is in season, it is often a lot cheaper than out of season. To get a better idea of which fish to eat in which season, there is the fish calendar.

Cheap(er) fish

So what kinds of fish should you eat, we hear you thinking? There are so many. On the list of cheaper alternatives to fish are: mackerel, weever, (salmon) trout, pollock, skate, gurnard… All these fish are a lot cheaper than the more familiar tuna, cod or salmon.
