There they are again: scallops are back in season. Available from today in our fish shop. But before you start snacking on them: below we list some facts for you.
Originally a souvenir
Did you know that scallops used to serve as souvenirs for pilgrims returning from Santiago De Compostela? The shells were proof of their visit to the pilgrimage site. Of course, the nuts themselves were also considered a delicacy back then.
Dieppe
The scallops we sell at Mer du Nord come directly from Dieppe in Normandy, France. The delicacy’s season runs from mid-October through March. The scallops are delicious in the pan with a butter sauce, but a carpaccio of the nuts served with a fresh vinaigrette or tasty truffle oil is also an absolute treat.
200 eyes
Not to put you off… But did you know scallops have up to 200 eyes? Those eyes are located on the mantle. There, they detect light, darkness and movement. Good for detecting food and surviving in the sea.
Available from today from our fishmongers.
